CBD Projects at a Glance

In October 2006 the Northern Territory Government launched Creating Darwin’s Future, a package of 93 proposals and ideas to shape the future of Darwin.

The initiatives listed below have been identified through extensive public consultation as the first round of key projects to make the
Central Business District (CBD) an even better place to live, work
and do business.

 

  • Myilly Point Headland including Flagstaff Park – $6 million to develop new family-friendly parklands at Myilly Point, linked by a foreshore promenade from Nurses Walk to Mindil Beach.
  • City Planning – Amendments to the NT Planning Scheme to improve building design and the street level building interface.
  • State Square – $250 000 to develop a Master Plan for a civic, heritage and community meeting space and focal point between the CBD and the Waterfront.
  • Ribbons of Green – Protecting and expanding green open spaces, to surround the Darwin city peninsula in a ‘ribbon of green’ from the Waterfront to the Esplanade, Old Hospital site, Myilly Point, promenade along Mindil Beach, Botanic Gardens to the old tank farm at Stuart Park.
  • City Entry Points – $1 million for landscaping of the entry points to the city where Daly Street and Tiger Brennan Drive intersect with McMinn Street.
  • Streetscape Precincts – Darwin City Council will implement a structured design style in Darwin’s CBD across four unique precincts, each with its own distinct look and feel and objectives.
  • Defence of Darwin WWII Museum – $250 000 for a concept design study to determine how best to build a WWII Museum next to Parliament House commemorating the Defence of Darwin.
