Overview - Moving Ahead

The launch of Creating Darwin’s Future in October 2006 provided a starting point for community discussions on how to make Darwin an even better place to live, work and play – how to balance economic, social and environmental priorities to create a world class tropical harbour city over the next 5-10 years and beyond.

Following feedback from the community, the Northern Territory Government is now funding and implementing the first round of projects for the Central Business District (CBD). Other initiatives outlined under Creating Darwin’s Future are already underway, being planned or considered for future rounds of implementation.

Consulting with the community

Since October 2006, the Northern Territory Government has undertaken wide-ranging consultations on Creating Darwin’s Future

  • staffed shopping centre displays providing direct face-to-face public feedback
  • briefings to key organisations and community groups
  • hundreds of e-mail responses through a dedicated website
  • six community forums involving business, tourism, professional, arts, heritage and community groups
  • a Darwin CBD Urban Planning Forum bringing together experts from government, industry and the community.

The Government has established a Working Group of senior public sector, industry and council representatives which has considered the feedback and drawn up the action plans for the first round of projects under Creating
Darwin’s Future.

The Northern Territory Government has identified three key themes to start the process towards developing Darwin into the place we would like it to be.

Three Key Themes

  • Recreation and Lifestyle – making sure the things that make the Darwin lifestyle special are protected and enhanced.
  • Tourism and Heritage – building on our unique history, heritage and physical features to protect our heritage and attract new visitors.
  • Development – striking the right balance as our industries, business and population grow.
