Darwin Waterfront

The Darwin Waterfront project will change the face of Darwin. With Stage One due for completion in 2008, it will refocus the city’s attention from the land to the water.

The Waterfront will provide a new range of residential and recreational options for Darwin people.

The Darwin Convention Centre will attract new tourists to the city. The new residential developments will revitalise the CBD. And the harbourside location will remind the people of Darwin how special their city really is.

What we would like to achieve

  • Shift the focus of the city to the harbourside, recapturing natural vistas and breezes.
  • New entertainment and recreational options for residents, bringing them back to the city centre to live, shop and have fun.
  • An iconic waterfront development, home of business, artistic and cultural pursuits that will attract visitors from around the world.

Revitalisation of the city centre

The Darwin Waterfront will add an exciting new dimension to the city centre. Linked to the CBD and Mall by shaded walkways, the precinct will be integrated into the surrounding city centre.

Over the life of the project more than 1300 new apartments will provide additional city centre shoppers, helping to revitalise the city centre. Tourist and visitor facilities will also bring new people to the city.

Plans include

  • CBD growth driven by a sheltered pedestrian link with the city.
  • New residents in the city centre

Places for families and friends to enjoy

Locals and visitors alike will be able to eat, drink, enjoy a tropical sunset, be entertained, take a stroll along the promenade or have a picnic or BBQ and enjoy the recreational facilities and children’s playground - all in a spectacular setting.

For the first time, Darwin people will be able to enjoy all the facilities one should expect in a tropical harbour city.

Plans include

  • A new wave lagoon.
  • A beach and protected water for water sports.
  • Shopping and entertainment.
  • Waterfront promenades and a sea wall.
  • Harbourside cafes and restaurants.
  • Family friendly parks and recreation areas.

Recognition of art, culture and heritage

The Darwin Waterfront is the first development in the Territory where public art will reflect the rich and varied history and culture of the area.

Plans include

  • Preservation of the numerous artifacts uncovered during the construction phase.
  • The preservation of the original Goyder’s Camp as an open space feature with assistance of a professional archeologist.
  • Preservation of the original Pump House building.
