State Square
State Square has great historical and community importance, incorporating Brown’s Mart, Town Hall ruins, Administrator’s Offices, the old Supreme Court site, Parliament House and the Supreme Court. The area is currently a random collection of heritage structures, carparks, ageing buildings and parklands.
This provides an opportunity to redevelop State Square into Darwin’s civic, heritage and community meeting place – a significant open ceremonial space and the civic heart of the city.
About the project
The Northern Territory Government has provided $250 000 to develop a Master Plan for State Square designed to revitalise the area as a large
open space of green parkland and a brand new community asset.
As a part of this project, a pedestrian connection will be created between the Waterfront and Smith Street Mall.
Interpretive signage and imaginative landscaping will help recreate the area’s sense of historical importance and heritage value.
The square will become a focal point and key link between the Waterfront, Central Business District (CBD), Esplanade, the new Defence of Darwin
WWII Museum and proposed new Visitor Centre. State Square will be a key link in the ribbons of green spaces that will surround the CBD under
Creating Darwin’s Future.
