Tourist Accommodation & Resorts
With Darwin’s reputation as an international tourist destination growing exponentially, peak season demand for quality accommodation continues to outstrip supply. The city needs more hotel rooms to service this growing market.
The other factor impacting on tourist accommodation is the demand for harbourside and resort-style accommodation, in keeping with Darwin’s location and climate.
Darwin needs to grow both the number and range of tourist accommodation options to meet this demand.
What we would like to achieve
- Visitors to Darwin have a range of accommodation choices to suit their style and budget, with 800 new rooms available by 2008.
- Tourism accommodation takes advantage of the city’s harbourside location and views.
- Long-term planning ensures there are adequate facilities to meet future demand.
New tourist accommodation and resorts
New accommodation has recently come on to the market, including the Darwin Airport Resort, expansion of the Cavenagh and Ashton Lodge, and new luxury apartments at Marina View.
But even with these additions, Darwin cannot provide enough hotel rooms, backpacker beds and caravan and camp sites to meet the huge demand. The opening of the Darwin Convention Centre in 2008 will put further pressure on the market.
Visitors to Darwin demand the full range of accommodation, from tent sites through to tropical resorts to five-star hotels. In the city centre itself, the demand is critical.
A particular need has been identified for waterfront resort style top-level hotel accommodation. The low-rise resort proposed for the SkyCity Casino site should go some way to meeting this need.
Major planned developments include
- Two new establishments at Darwin Waterfront, including a Medina Hotel.
- An inner city seaside resort.
- Serviced apartments at the Saville Pandanas vertical resort on Knuckey Street.
- New motel rooms at the Mirambeena resort on Cavenagh Street
- Government will also work with business on an ongoing basis to identify any constraints and address future accommodation needs.
- A luxury hotel at the China Town Development
